My mechanic has set up a leisure battery system for me under the rear seat with a mains hook up. The zig unit that is mounted on the wardrobe unit does not appear to work. It is a Zig CP400v if that makes sense to anyone. It has a switch for car battery and 'caravan' battery. When I switch to caravan battery the green light comes on, but not when I have it on car battery.It has 3 switches - lights, pump and aux and three little black circles. It has a green light for normal and a red light for low. Ideally I would like this to work.
How can I know if it's broken and needs mending or if it needs replacing. I really to find a book that explains auto electrics for the beginner I think !!

He just hasn't connected the starter battery to it that's all. That's why the led only lights if switched to 'caravan', ie the leisure battery. You can check what each fuse does by turning everything on and removing the fuses one by one.

Thank you 1664. I am assuming you mean the row of fuses linked to the leisure battery, not the ones in the front behind the glove box ?
I am keen to learn, and have half a brain, could you recommend a good publication for me to read and get started ?

I meant the three circular fuses on the Zig CP400 itself. It's a very simple bit of kit really. Take a 30A fused feed from each battery to the three position switch and you can choose which battery supplies the circuits it feeds. From the switch the feed loops around the switches and the load side of the individual switches go to the individual fuses. Then each fuse supplies it's own circuit; lighting, water pump and a spare usually although sometimes the lighting is spread over two depending on how it's wired. The facility to use the starter or 'car' battery is for emergency really, in case your leisure battery goes t!ts up. It's just a small distribution board really, a kind of 12v three way fuseboard.

Take the fuse out feeding it, unscrew it and have a peek behind. It's so simple, just imagine the wires are water pipes and the switches are taps.
You will know what fuse feeds it because if you switch it to 'caravan' the led will illuminate and go out when you pull the correct fuse. The fuse should be immediately adjacent to your battery. I'm assuming the starter battery is not connected based on the fact the led does not illuminate when switched to 'car' but might be best to check there isn't a similar fused cable running from that too
