age related plate

hi i have a 1981 t3 2lt Aircooled
it was imported in 1987 so it went straight onto a Q plate
i want to put it back to the original age related plate but dont know where to start
i have contacted dvla and they say i need written comfirmation from vw as to the age
but has anyone done this before and where do i contact

Have you still got the original registration documents? other countries register in much the same way as we do so they will have the date of first registration albeit, in another language.

no mate i have the registration docs which say first registered in uk in 1987
which clearly is wrong as i have a early Aircooled
i have contacted vw germany through vw birth certificate with the vin number and they seem to be helping
will keep you posted.

The letter you need is called a "Heritage Letter" which you get from VW. They charge £50, you supply chassis number and they issue an official letter stating manufacture date. I had to get one when I imported the van. I found the application letter on a page relating to European Certificate of Conformity (which doesn't apply to our vans!)

recieved my vans birth certificate today born on the 7th of november 1980 so have spoken to dvla and the ball is rolling.
so hopefully will have an age related plate asap

Well just recieved a call from dvla and the age related docs are on there way,"and she is on a W plate
so getting the vw birth cert works a treat thanks guys.

renewed faith in dvla
not only have i now got an age related plate but after a lengthy conversation on the phone and many many pics and docs i now have a motor caravan instead of a panel van with windows,
so all good and big up dvla poole in dorset.....
