Handbrake Spreader Bar - cables coming adrift

My handbrake cables seem to come adrift from the spreader bar quite often. I've had my local garage check and adjust and have added a couple of plastic tie-wraps to prevent the cables jumping out of their slots but they have just done it again!

It seems to happen when the lever is in the off position and there is (presumably) some slack in the cables. When the lever is pulled, one of the nipples jumps out of it's slot and hey-presto, no handbrake. Again!

Am I missing something?? I presume the spreader is a bit worn but it doesn't look like this should happen as long as there is a bit of tension on the cables.

the springs on the end of the cables should maintain some tension in the set up to stop them popping out, so maybe the bar is deformed/damaged or the springs have seized

The bar itself looks OK. Looks likely it's the springs. Are those springs inside the brake drum?

Yes.

You can see it behind the right hand shoe.
