Replaced carb and not running right..

Hi all,

I have an '87 1.9DG.

I recently had to swap out my Pierberg as the nubbin that the vacuum hose went on had snapped off (I still have old carb) replacement came sans choke, so have used original. Replacement carb went on easily enough, and engine idle etc was adjusted to the point that we were happy with tick over etc.

Now starting the engine from cold it struggles to start and I have to feather the exhaust to get it to go. When I accelerate the engine dies.. unless feathering the exhaust. When engine is warm this problem is not apparent.

I am assuming that the Choke is causing over-fueling - if this is the case, is it likely to be poorly set up? or do I need to get a carb refurb kit as has been suggested to me?

Any input greatfuly received.

Thanks in advance -

Ru

Now there's a straightforward answer!

Thanks, I'll get one ordered!

FYI - I don't think that is the correct vacuum unit for the choke. Assuming that what you want is the the choke-pulldown vacuum unit then that Brickwerks item (quoted above) is the secondary throttle vacuum unit (I think? or is certainly looks like it from the pic)

If its only doing it when cold, it could be quite the opposite - ie not enough fuel. Engine always needs a richer mixture (or degrees of) when cold.

Yes, it's only when cold and it runs fine after the point that I would expect the choke to stop.

Check that the choke actually operates then. That would seem to be a good starting point given the symptoms. Certainly don't order anything until you've pinpointed the problem. Might just need choke adjustment. :D It could be that the flap is fully open all the time - that'd do it.
