These are made of relatively soft metal so a good sharp chisel (small head) gets them out. In a garage they would normally use a sliding hammer but a bit expensive to buy for a one off.

I am sure I have read somewhere about using a "rawl bolt" to do it too ?

out all weekend so wont have a chance to replace it, it occurred to me that it wouldn't come out as it might be so worn that i was trying to get a hold of the engine casing on one side and what was left of the bearing on the other.
it will have a go with the expanding bolt idea as i have a box of them.

question: when they are removed do they come out easy or are they normally stuck in and require a lot of swearing?

Thanks

Andy

One I did on jambo came out easily , also did it on my old beetle, that came out easy as did a few on type 2s I've done. It shouldn't put up much if a fight

i received 4 cuts to my hand trying and didn't get it out, makes me think its so worn i was pulling on the engine casing.

Although I mentioned the expanding bolt, when I did the one on our "other" van I resorted to chiselling it to bits with one of those screwdrivers with a metal shaft in the handle so you can hammer it. It's very awkward to get at and a torch and mirror helps to see what is going on. Yes it can involve a lot of swearing ! Take your time, stop and have a brew when the swearing gets too loud. It will come out eventually, even if it is in many pieces. Use your torch and mirror to make sure all the bits are out before you attempt to fit the new one !

When you get to the stage of fitting the new one stick a rag in the belhousing starter hole to prevent you dropping the new bush in the bellhousing :D
