HI folks,

Can anyone recommend any advice or tips. I have a 2.0l air cooled sitting in my T25. The engine was started last year but has ben left sitting since. Fuel is reaching the engine so the fuel lines, pump and tank are sound... but she will not start!

We have tipped petrol in the carbs, sprayed smart start down them etc etc. The sparks are sound and have been warmed up prior to cranking her over.

Can anyone give any advice on tha above???

If all the plugs have been out to warm them up make sure the leads have been put back in the right order. Oh and try fresh petrol.

If the fresh juice fails try tow starting it.

If you've tried drying / cleaning plugs and there is a spark at plugs then a teaspoon of juice down carbs should give some response unless the compressions are down. You need 3 thing to start ,small ammount of fuel so as not to flood it,Compression,and spark at plugs. If you have those 3 it should at least try even if it backfires . Then you can go on to fixing the backfire. (you haven't said if it backfires or tries to fire)

Just a thought: Even though you may be seeing a spark at the plugs, bear in mind that the timing needs to be pretty close to correct, otherwise it won't fire. Have you had the distributor out, or has it got rotated on its clamp? Or, as Boxy says above, have you put the leads back in the correct order? If any of these things have happened, your timing could either be way out, or the firing order could be wrong.

What I've found in the past, while trying to diagnose problems like this for people, is that it's best to assume nothing. Start from first principles, by making sure that the rotor arm is pointing towards no.1 plug when the timing mark is about right on the pulley, then make sure that the leads are in the correct order from that point. You'd be surprised how many times I've seen things set up 180 degrees out. Once you correct this, it should at least attempt to fire, if it was running before it was laid up and the compression is reasonable.

Have you checked for a spark at the plugs ?

You need to give more info,1, is engine turning over fast enough and 2, is it attempting to start such as popping back through either carb or exhaust. If it's the latter it suggests its either firing at wrong time or a valve is not sealing properly or opening out of sync with firing point.

The engine is turning over it is just not attempting to strart at all.. what else do you require? I will check the leads 2m..

If the engine is turning over lively enough (no flat battery ) you could blindfold yourself and swap the h.t. leads round randomley and provided it had the 3 other requirements of , compression, plug spark, and fuel , it would attempt to fire or backfire. I would start by checking compressions. If they're ok then valves and pistons can be discounted and its spark or fuel thats problem. If it was sparking,but at wrong point I would still expect some kind of pop and bang response
