The black air vents with the adjusting lever on the lower rear of the front doors, what are they for ? If you look down the tunnel in the door it is solid so there is no way air can get from that tunnel into or out of the black vents. Have a look at yours.

I have had Gill try to detect any air going in or out whilst I was cruising along at ~60mph, using the smoke test, but we cannot detect any airflow

I understand from CovKid that on a Caravelle (mini bus) the "tunnels" feed fresh air from the front of the van to some vents at the centre rear of the roof. Fair enough, but those black vents seem to go nowhere...

Ah, thanks, so in theory, air enters those vents and is sucked out via some holes at the front of the doors and thence out into the world via the gap between the door and the body. Off now to look at the front of my doors for those 3 holes...

I said this at Pikey John. On Caravelle models there are four small vents along the roof edge inside which also extract air, the ram effect drawing stale air from the interior. This is where I don't subscribe to adding scoops to rear vents as these vents also let out engine heat and help draw fresh air through the interior. 70s Beetles also had them - for the same purpose - in a small crescent shape behind rear side windows. It also (to some extent) helps reduce condensation between panel skins, helping to dry them out.

Are you talking about the vents in the rear windows or the vents behind the rear windows in the body?

For interest, these vents in the door are not present in the South African build. VW evidently felt that the redesign of the rear quarter panel vents provided the needed through flow of air.

well...ive had my van for 7 years.....only just found out what the 4 levers do

It is handy using that large vent in the B post for waxing the bottom of the post after repair although there is another albeit smaller at the bottom inside covered with tape - at least there is on my Caravelle.

That's brilliant... I always thought I had one of the " fury grill" things mentioned here missing.. And have missed a good few on eBay and been surprised what they fetch! And it turns out that one is ment to be missing( cooker fridge side) .. Made my day that has!!!!

I watched the discussion about the door vents at the Pikey meet, but this link has finally demistified the mystery of the door vents the 'missing' furry seal and other internal vents in my westie. Most educational. Cheers.
