Last year my van failed the MOT on the beam direction( for the first time in 10 years!!!) so I fitted a pair of brickie but this year it failed again... Do they only last a year?... They look exactly as they did when I fitted them...

Point it at a garage door tonight, dip beam on, and post a pic of the beam pattern.

Might just be an overly-picky tester who's forgotten that beam benders are explicitly permitted, might be a genuine issue.

Masks or converter kits may be fitted to right hand dip headlamps to temporarily alter the lamp for use in the UK by removing the beam ‘kick-up’ to the right.

A headlamp altered in this way is not a reason for rejection, if:
a. the headlamp aim is not rejected for the reasons listed under diagram 1 (except that the top of the beam image will be a straight line)
b. the light output is not unduly reduced - not usually a problem with commercially produced kits
c. the mask or converter is securely attached.

I use beam deflectors too.

Are the plastic inserts that the headlights attach to along with the adjusting screws fit into, still in one piece as that could be the problem? They get brittle and fail leaving headlights out of their correct alignment. Mine failed last year because of that. Got new ones from Brickwerks and the problem was solved.

I used cable ties too for a while too until my van failed, but you need the proper bits to make the headlights sit properly. Not expensive either.
