Rear shock absorber nuts and bolts

So ordered a pair of new shock absorbers from Brickwerks today. Then got onto thinking about the removal of the nuts and bolts. So purchased a nut splitter set from Machine Mart to give the nuts some pain if needed but thought I will need replacement nuts and bolts.
VW Heritage want £12.90ea for the bolt (50% off!) + £1.70ea for the nut (7 wk wait

) £12.90x4 + £1.70x4 = £58.40!
Are people reusing the original fixings? Surely not....They are quite specific on the VW Heritage site M12X65X1.5mm pitch and 10.9 tensile.
Am I people daft here or what?

Either that or I being too tight again

I had special copper covered nut on the lower bolt, so no problems on removal. I had reused the old ones.

Ah ok thanks. Think I'll order nuts as they are easy to get hold of. Rob

Which part of the spec is crucial? The length? Tensile? Material? I'm I just banging on about nothing?? Please say "for feck sake lad any high tensile bolt will do so long as it fits"

M12x1.5 is a fine thread, normal (coarse) M12 is 1.75mm pitch.

Just been out and checked and they have 10.9 stamped on the head. VW must of used 10.9 grade for a reason? No?

Ok, "for feck sake lad any high tensile bolt will do so long as it fits"
As long as it fits and does up tight. Job done. You don't need to go to VW for em. I used the originals. Nowt wrong with them. However, this isn't rocket science. If you feel the need to replace them, just order some but not from VW, they charge the earth for bolts. CV bolts are £2 each!

as covkid says or look in yellow pages for bolts and fastenings, but lets face it shocker bolts aren't exactly stressed. I would put mine back if they had no corrosion.

Brickwerks sell what they fit.
If you give them a ring (or email them) and tell them what you need then I'm sure they can sort you out. They must buy them by the hundred.
Bolts definitely for sale-

I have to agree with Covkid. When I saw those prices for one bolt from VW Heritage, the only thing I could think was that they'd got the decimal point in the wrong place. £25.80 for ONE M12 BOLT!
You really don't need to go to your favourite parts supplier for nuts and bolts. It seems that a lot of them make a massive markup on those bits, relying on the fact that most people want to buy everything in one place. Go to a fasteners supplier, as said above. Plenty of dedicated suppliers around, or Toolstation/Screwfix. For example, 50 bolts M12x70mm from TS are £8.22 at the moment. That's 16p each! Even if you do need 10.9 rated bolts, rather than 8.8, the fastener suppliers can easily sort you out.

Replaced the shocks today. Dead easy. Butane torch is now my favourite tool
Replaced the bottom bolts with 8.8's and nylon nuts in the end!

Did mine yesterday - re-used the original ones that had no wear. No heat needed just a 4ft bar to loosen them.
