I have no experience of Aircooled but for any T3 some pointers......

Fresh oil and filter

Take the spark plugs out and get a 3 in one oil spray with a tube and spray it around inside the bores, then turn it over say 20 times with a socket on the crank, then leave it overnight and turn it over again say 20 times before even considering using the starter motor.

New battery but before connecting...

visually check the wiring to the starter, particularly insulation, remove connections to starter and clean them up. Maybe remove starter and make sure it turns.

remove earth straps to battery, engine, gearbox and clean them up.

new dizzy cap, rotor arm, sparks and leads.

clean up earth crowns behind fuse box and earth connections in engine bay.

drain any old fuel, replace filters, check fuele pipes, all of them and replace if perished, check filler neeck and add fresh fuel.

I'm sure there is more....

Hello,

WHS^^^

While the spark plugs are out.....

make sure you have a spark at the plugs.. ignition on ..starter.. hold plug to a good earth.. see spark..

You will have the 'Hall effect' system....which is complicated.. but if there is a spark, then go for a start up...

The chances are that there will be at least 1 hydraulic tappet that will be stuck.. just let the engine run up to temperature...

and hopefully the tractor clacking will go away.... :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl

Fingers crossed.....

Cordialement.

:ok

I was also thinking carb float(s) my be stuck, or the needle valve rubber seal perished, if they are then petrol will overflow from the float chamber and flood the engine so if it won't start and smells alot of petrol carbs may need looking at.

when it does start the oil you added will make a lot of smoke for quite some time so don't worry too much about that and as said it will also sound like a bag o nails if it has hydraulic tappetets. smoke + noise = very nervous time and could take as much as half an hour of running to settle down, just don't rev it let it tick over initially.

Just to point out that that means turns by hand. Don't attempt to run the starter motor whilst it is off the van or you stand a good chance or damaging it. They only have a bearing at one end, the other end is supported on a bearing that stays in the bellhousing when you take the starter off ;)

^^^yes he's right, I did say 'New battery but before connecting' but could easily be mis interpreted.
