damaged valve bucket/cam follower

hello all, just thought i would ask a quick question if thats ok...... we have owned deliah the 1.9td (aaz engine i believe) t25 camper for a 8 months now and we are slowly but surely (and expensively) "doing her up" but this is proving to be a labour of love and sometimes a soul destroying task but i suppose that is part of the ownership process! anyway on the bad advise of a couple of people i changed the pulley on the altenator, put on a new belt and fired her up with disastrous consequences. the belt came off the crank pulley, wrapped around the back and knocked the timing out slightly. one of the valves smashed the cam follower or valve bucket (i believe its called that, its a polished cylinder with the end blanked off which the cam rubs over) and slightly scored the cam shaft. she runs on idle fine and is understandably a bit loud under acceleration (i had to get her home) and herein lies the question. has anyone else suffered a similar issue and is it worth fitting a new valve bucket, re timing her and hoping for the best or is that simply a stupid idea dreamed up by a fool with no idea? i appreciate a definitive answer cannot be given without pictures or an inspection and there is so much information i have not given but the eternal optimist inside me is clutching at straws. the end of the valve bucket has been knocked of and is quite badly dented but the cam has gotten away reasonably lightly. i dont know if i have done any further damage to the internals but i am a bit short on money at the moment and there is the slimmest of chances i may have been fortunate (although the way things are going with her its very very unlikely, she seems to be possessed or something like the car in the stephen king novel christine but in reverse). i know the only way to tell is to strip it down but it would probably be cheaper to buy a complete engine and drop it in than have someone do all the investigative work and buy new parts.
any suggestions or ideas would be greatly received and i thank anyone who has any good advice.
cheers for taking the time, i appreciate it more than anyone knows.
