Cut my head open at work today

Well my cracked WBX head
I was interested to know how thick the metal around the valves was where the crack had gone through into the water channels, and interested to know what it looked like inside.
It's sand casting I'm told, well at least the water channel cores are.
Also interesting to note if drilling out exhaust studs there is not much metal behind the studs before you are into the water channels.

Any chance that you could measure the depth of the exhaust studs please?

So to fix my engine I got one with a broken stud and used the heads.
What2d has kindly removed the broken stud from the donor engine with his welding a nut on method ( I'm sure he will write that one up one day

) and so i'm going to rebuild it as a spare, I needed another head as that one^^^^ is never going to be serviceable now
So I got a second hand head, to be fair the person who sold it to me didn't notice the corrosion between the valve seats and is sending another.
It's severely corroded to the back of the valve seat, same on both cylinders, it's obviously been sitting a while and corroded a little on the valves but there is no carbon on the head or valves and minimal on the ports implying it's been run on LPG, it's obviously not been steam cleaned.
1988 German cast head
Anybody seen this before? I suppose it could have had a water leak into both chambers and run for a while.
another novelty door stop...

Hello,
Most interesting photo..
Looking at the corrosion about the spark plug, I wonder whether some terrible product was used and not rinsed off..
Causing the destruction ..in a puddle(?) of the side of the valve seat....
Any way doorstop it is...
You might want to cut off the exhaust studs first though ...
Cordialement..

That erosion to the combustion chamber, seen in the centre of that pic, by the exhaust valve, is odd isn't it. Makes one wonder what caused it.

I have two more like it now, I think it's when a head gasket goes and it's been driven, water turns to steam and is very corrosive. I know the engine it took the others from was driven with a faulty head gasket.

no replies to this so I suppose it's not so common, even sarran was stumped
