Check your earth strap....and the connections on the starter motor itself, it is in a very exposed place and the wires/connectors can deteriorate especially check the "exciter" wire connection is sound.

Mine used to do this I replaced earths, cleaned and secured connectors but it eventually failed totally and I had to replace the starter motor because the carbon brushes had totally worn away. If you have time today remove the starter and strip it to see what state your brushes are in, a relatively simple check to put your mind at rest or alert you to an impending problem.

The starter was new a year ago. Its annoying as itll start ok ten times, play up and then be ok again . I did however find that the + battery clamp was pretty loose so this may be the cause ?, especially as its under the seat.

Mine did that.
I changed the starter motor.
It still did it.
Changed the ignition switch.
Never done it since.

If it has started every time SINCE discovering the loose battery clamp then that's what it was!
Given a petrol starter motor draws around 150 amps on a cold start, it is absolutely vital that all the heavy wiring can deliver that amount of current...loose terminals will just get hot and arc.

Most probably was the battery terminal Martin, it was pretty loose. See what happens i guess.
