Hi. I am rebuilding the braking system from new. I was wondering how I fix the shoe retainer to the back plate?
Does it just sit in the hole or does it need fixing still?
Any help appreciated.

They just push through from the back, hold with a fingertip, then spring on from the front, push and twist the retaining cap with a pair of pliers. Nothing more needed.

Page 46.6 in the Bentley.
Two bolts, torque 65 Nm - 47 ft lb.

I think that the previous posters have the wrong end of the stick , but should you really be doing your brakes without a manual or knowing what's what?

Martin your picture isn't showing?

OBG, it's not the 2 bolts to the bearing housing im on about. I bought the 2 shoe retainers from BW about £6 each. They sit in a sort of cup. You can see in the picture, 1 is half in, the other lay on the back plate. They hold the bottom of each brake shoe in place ( same job the cylinder does at the top)

Does that make things any clearer?

OBG, I get what you're saying about the brakes too. But I'm pretty confident and have a friend who can check most stuff over.

and how they fit into the cast iron Y-piece attached to the back plate.


Just plonk in, don't they? Mebbe a smear of copaslip on them to stop the seizing?

Those pieces just sit in the holes, they don't move, so as Adrian says, you could put a smear of copaslip on them but as they don't move this wouldn't serve any purpose other than enabling easy dis-assembly in the future.

The bottom assembly is then bolted to the back plate. (the whole lower assembly just acts as a heel pivot) the shoes just rock on these as the wheel cylinder pushes the brake shoes out at the top.
