Diagnosing diesel rev counter

Hi all can anyone help me with a few pointers for diagnosing my rev counter. The van is still very alien to me, from a driving point of view and I would love to know how hard (or not) I am pushing it.

Apparently the rev counter used to work (according to the old owner) who has no reason to lie since I bought it as a non- runner, I can see that there is a red/black cable connected to the W terminal from the alternator

Is there a way of testing the output from the alternator? Or sending an output to the rev counter to test it? Any pointers on next steps?

Thanks in advance

Matt

I've also been looking at why my glowplugs dont work, turns out they are working but the bulb in the dash is not telling me so - so I guess I have some dodgy wies/connectors in the dash pod.

Anyone else suffered this? Any advice?

Check the condition of the 14-way edge connector to the dash panel first. Both the flexi pcb plug side and the socket side on the end of the harness.
