I had disconnected cable then discovered thermostat failed anyway.

This website has a good explanation and some fixes.

Looking at engine rebuild at the moment and will definitely repair the thermostat too.

Took my thermostat off last night and got to clean up and examine sometime soon...

I have been through three of those thermostats since my engine was rebuilt three years ago! Not sure if that is supposed to happen. On an episode of wheeler dealers, the one in which they did up the 914, they replaced the old bellow style thermostat for a modern one.
