Engine Surge

Right, my 2.1dj engine has a bit of a surge. It happens when the throttle is being feathered to maintain a steady speed, or when driving slowly in town, and almost feels like the van is in too high a gear. I can get rid of it by accelerating out of it, but I have to pull away harder than I'd like to as it also seems to have a bit of a flat spot. The van has just reached 200,000 miles and the genuine VW exchange engine has done about 40,000 miles, and runs a 5 speed diesel gearbox. The throttle position switches have been removed at some point, and the idle control unit thingy has also been linked out. It starts and idles well, and the emissions at the last MoT where good (idle checked only). the timing is set at +5deg at 800rpm. Any ideas? Cheers.

with no throttle switch the ecu doesn't know what's going on, if the throttle switch is wired open then at low speed the engine won't be able to understand that you are foot off, foot on so it can't really determine load just from the hall sender and won't fuel accordingly
sounds like the engine is basically good just wants the complete ignition system and setting up with that all working rather than the compromised setting it must be running now - if running on gas it's less of an issue as it's just a throttle body system the ecu does little

Thanks Aiden, I think I'll need to source some switches. The 2 connections are there but I think the switches must have been removed for some reason when the engine was changed. Anyone know who might have some? Cheers.
