I have a t25 hi top camper van with a 1.6 diesel /4 speed & have been offered a spare gear box from a T3 air cooled 1.6 petrol 4 speed. Are they the same,or can one change the bell housing or something? What g.box's go with which engines? would appreciate some info.

yes you can change the bell housing and the diesel input shaft looks slightly larger with slightly different splines to me, but maybe that's not true since i haven't measured yet.
depending on year of your van you might have to modify the shift linkage.

I was measuring the input shaft lengths on a t25 Deisel 5 sp and a petrol 4 speed bay box last weekend and they are different. I have looked at the possibility of putting a T25 box in my T2 but the shifting setup is totally different. Perhaps someone knows how to adapt it? If its a good box being offered at the right price then buy and sell on?
Bay boxes fetch good money.
Out of interest is it a 3 or 6 rib box? If its a 6 give me first dibs

if i follow this rightly, you have a bay with a diesel engine and want a gearbox and are wondering about fitting a T25 box in a bay?
i've seen T25 boxes in bays( with wasserboxer injins and diesels) and it's perfectly do-able.
if yer handy with yer brain as well as spanners. and grinders and cutters and welders etc etc......
i dunno how much you know about bays, but the type 4 injinned models do have a longer shaft on the box, plus the bellhousing and starters are different from 1600's.

I have a early bay and I'm builing a 1776 Aircooled motor, should be over 90hp and was looking at fitting either a longer ratio 4 speed or a 5 speed just to make crusing a little easier (the 4 speed would be the better option I think)
To fit a T25 box you're right, I'd need to change the bell housing/starter for and Aircooled one and would probably have to change the input shaft for the A/C one as well and the older ones were longer.
I'm not what can be done about changing the shifting arrangement from the side of the box (T25) to the front of the box (Bay). It may be better in the end just to get a 4 speed bay box rebuild with different ratios.
