Smoke from new turbo?

Hi all
Have just fitted a reconditioned turbo to the van - it has a 1.9 TD engine with the 1.6 turbo/exhaust set up. Also fitted new oil feed and run off lines as recommended. Was sure to prime the turbe which i did by unhooking power to the injectors and turning the engine over.
Started her up and there is a definate improvement in power at the bottom end, though not much at top end, still struggles to get over 80 km - but no blue smoke, or clouds coming out of exhaust running well.
Only problem is that i have just driven it the 10 minute journey to work and noticed that the turbo is getting very hot, to the point that there are wisps of smoke coming out the connection between the turbo and exhuast down pipe - also smells hot. The oil warning light hasn't come on or the buzzer of doom, so i assume that oil is moving around the engine. Is this normal? How hot should a turbo get? Please say i haven't "feck" the turbo up somehow...
Any help or advise much appreciated!
