powerflex transmission mount??

hi all ,i'm after some advice as ever as im not great with the mechanics but am slowly learning
i decided to change the trans mount bush as im trying to stop first gear from popping out and noticed that my existing bush seems to be supporting pin bolt approx 8-10 mm below center (was this normal?.)
so by replacing bush and lifting gearbox slightly i was praying it would make enough difference to the linkage to help first engage fully.....
powerflex bush in and slight improvement (fully engages more often than not but still has tendency to jump out when you least want it)
when taking ... sry mangling out the old bush was i supposed to take out steal inner ring aswell??
effects are that the engine note has changed considerably and resonates at approx 2000 -2500rpm is this normal ??
is it because its to tight ?? seemed to slip in (oh er!) easy enough
any help advice always greatly appreciated
also any thoughts on sec hand dk box from t25 direct for 250 quid ?? what would it cost me to get fitted??

Which variant of powerflex gearbox mount bush do you have? Brickwerks tested and developed two or three different prototypes before settling on the final design (that does not resonate). However powerflex in their wisdom sold these early untested designs.
If your powerflex mount is solid it will resonate, if it has voids in it it will not (I tested both for brickwerks)
The final and most perfect design is on sale at brickwerks. There are however two variants. Do you have the right one?

Crap vibrating design (sold widely on ebay)
Good design (sold by brickwerks)

As it say's on Brickwerks page be EXTRA carefull about the sizes ... my 2.1 was a 1.9 and of course the rebuilt gearbox built as a 2.1 still had the original smaller bush. They can be a bugger to get out as the steel outer sleeve has to be pressed out ... mine had a spot weld kindly added to one end

How my arms laughed for the following week

Don't you just love it when you spend a day swearing at something that you are trying to dismantle and the the next day your fresh eyes spot something like that spot weld that was preventing progress!

I took the weld out with about an hour and a half of 'Daddy Words' (pat pending) and it took 2 minutes in the press @werk once the lads had turned a socket down
Oh how we laughed

bush was purchased from brickwerks , for petrol not diesel, removed mount drilled out rubber and cut and grinded and cut some more scrapped etc etc.
bit im not clear on is whether original bush was mounted in steal ring and should i have pressed ring out before installing new bush???
new bush fitted snug into mount just had to push lip in a little ,seems if inner ring was removed bush may have been to easily installed ! when fitted ,hole for steal sleeve was oval but by putting 15mm pipe in one end and pushing through it went in fine , the final fit was tight but not distorted in any way could it be that i'm hearing normal engine note now that i don't have a sloppy bush!!

just read fitting guide on brickwerks and will be taking everything apart and fitting correctly soon as
why do a job once when you can do it twice and learn a whole lot more

no fitting guide as such, just this statement that now has me baffled
"This bushing requires you to remove the bracket from the vehicle and remove the old bush and metal sleeve, the new bush can then be simply pushed home and the sleeve inserted".
im now not sure if done right or not ,

where it says old bush metal sleeve ..is metal sleeve the one that support pin goes through as the only sleeve with new kit is dead center of bush ergo old metal sleeve would be dead center meaning i have removed correctly and fitted new right, with talk of pressing out metal ring im on the verge of stripping apart and attempting to remove wide diameter metal ring that appears to sit just inside bush housing
could somebody please shed some light on What the blithering heck to do next

As I said before you need to remove the outer shell of the bush.

Hey 82camper,
This link may help you,
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewto ... rbox+mount" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It really is not difficult apart from destroying the old bush, I took out a hacksaw blade and refitted it through the old bush then just cut the metal enough to pound it out.
Good luck, Mark.

Holy thread revival batman!
Just fitted one of the Brickworks Powerflex gearbox mounts and can attest to it being a b*gg*r getting the old rubber and steel whatsit out of the middle of the mount. After trying all sorts of ways to just push the sleeve out, I found the best way was to make a single cut with a large hacksaw through the outer rubber and metal sleeve, being carful not to damage the outer tubing of the main mounting.
Then with a cold chisel or 1/2 inch bolster attack each side of the cut you just made causing the inner sleeve tube to start to fold in on itself, this is best done with a BFH (Big F**kin' Hammer), as you need a decent bit of weight behind it to get anywhere fast. I tried with a normal hammer and a screwdriver to start but didn't get very far and snapped the first screwdriver! (Wear eye protection) So believe me, the big hammer and cold chisel are the quickest and easiest way. Anyway, when the sleeve is loosened enough, the whole middle assembly knocks through with a couple of good whacks.
Then I rubbed the edges of the mount with some coarse emery paper to take off any sharp edges or lumps before applying a little lube (ooer) to both halves of the new bush, shoving it home and inserting the sleeve.
When bolting back up, make sure you bolt it into the same set of holes it came off in the first place!
Simples!
