I'm going to have to remove my engine hopefully this weekend and I've been searching a lot but can't find many specifics.

I've got a Haynes and it sounds kind of straightforward but is there anything I need to pay particular attention to when it comes to separating it from the automatic gearbox (staying in van) and what kind of clearance will I need when I want to remove with air box and carbs still attached?

The most complicated job I've done is changing the pushrod tube seals so I'm more than a little nervous of breaking something

best to remove airbox and just cover top of carbs with rags , make shure you have a decent large jack with a large top plate makes engine more stable when removing , and dont forget the bolts in the torque convertor

As above and remove the accelerator cable spring bracket. Personally I always remove the plastic top part of oil filler tube and plug the hole, you can catch them on the rear valence cracking them as the plastic has become brittle with age, they are no longer available new.

Thanks for the tips, they aren't covered in the Haynes and the less damage the better

Think I'll be able to drop it straight onto a palette just with axle stands jacking up the back?

i would be carefull just dropping the engine onto a pallet it would be very easy to damage the bottom engine studs due to the engine not being supported properly

CT, CU, they all come out the same, line up the gearbox on an axle stand as shown and use the trolley jack to free the engine and then lower gently..

So you don't want to risk driving here with it...

Though they were topping up every 40 kms or so and left a trail of drips all round the village...

Haha thought about it but it's over 1000km and im losing a lot if oil, probably 300ml just sitting on the road this last week. I fastened a tin under it just to catch the oil for the 3 mile drive to where I'm taking it out. I did have a look at the area on google maps and it's certainly a place we need to go somettime.

Btw can I turn the engine using a normal socket or do I need the vw tool?

A very good dvd to pick up is the Bug me type 4 engine strip down and rebuild featuring jake raby type 4 guru. very clear instructions.

Almost done. Just go to remove the two lower bolts to the transmission and the engine bearer. There's a bit in the Haynes that says to remove the bolt holding the transmission to the rubber mounting. Does this need to be done at all, wouldn't loosening it suffice?

Hi , yes i t does help , just gives a wee bit of additional clearance for the engine to slide off the gearbox spigot

Thanks Mike, off to spend my Sunday lunch time getting it out now

Engine is out yay. The bloomin torque converter fell off though and it's lost some oil. I popped it back on and have used some wire to hold it in place, have I done any real damage you think?

You wont have done much harm.. you’ll be putting all new fluid in .

so as long as no bits fell out

I wish I could get my van to you - I love your videos on youtube and your advice is amazing. My Aircooled needs an overhaul but I live in rural scotland and I am just not confident to do it myself. If you ever fancy an all expenses paid 'holiday' to Scotland then let me know
