tried searching for previous results but no joy
My current stereo sticks out of the dash by about 10mm because it hits the blower unit in the dash,
anybody found shorter head units, trying the mechless routebut for some reason most seem the same size as units with cd players.

Most units are pretty much the same size.. The blower case is quite a bit lower than the stereo! There is a little metal hanger the the back of the units locate into to support the weight, that might be bent perhaps ?? But most do still seem to stick out a bit but halfords sell a trim to tidy it up a bit

No CD player, but has two USB ports and a standard aux-in, iPod and iPhone compatible and is only about half the depth of a cd head unit, so fits straight into the slot. I can charge my iPod and Phone at the same time via the USB's There is a non-Bluetooth one for £10 less. Works well, sounds fine (even in my diesel) and I can even make phone calls on the move. For an extra £30 (I think) you can fit a DAB receiver to it as well.

I've had two Kenwoods fitted tight but they do fit.

I recently fitted a new Sony stereo with a bit a playing around managed to get it to fit flush, took the ash tray out so I could get behind tidy the cables up to make the extra room .

T25's use a standard apperture and the depth was also 'standard' at the time but even the cheapest of units nowadays are several times MORE powerful than the original units were.
This has typically led to alluminium heatsink fins being added to the lower section of new units increasing their depth.
The accomodate the slightly deeper head units that support bracket and grommet, can be worked back and forth and broken off. In most cases this gives you all the extra space needed (20 - 25mm).

With the T25 having a metal dash it holds the stereo pretty square and I can't honestly say removing the support is an issue (you wouldn't be able to fit the support stud anyway).

When I fitted my stereo I moved the support back, with a little extra pressure! Accessed through the ash tray apperature. Then slid the stereo in & secured the stereo to the support using an M3 bolt (IIRC). Stereo is a Kenwood with a CD & aux input.

went for the phillips ce153dr from halfords, only 3 1/2 inch deph. no cd but as h-g said pretty good sound for £69 (cheaper from other sources but i needed it quick). Ipod connection works well, not had chance to try blue tooth yet.
Found a few others but looking at a lot more money (e.g. parrot), not sure i would appreciate it in a diesel t25.

BassFace do a couple of good deckless units, with 128mm mounting depth.
Bargains at £35 each, very similar spec but slightly different facia styling. Look to have very good reviews.

We've got a modern Pioneer CD/USB/MP3/Bluetooth head unit. It fits in just fine, depth wise. BUT you do need to be a bit careful in routing stuff behind it as you insert it. Remove the ashtray, look down, and you'll see whatever's stopping it from fitting fully home.

Spacing it out from the dash sounds like a great way to increase the number of skinned knuckles on gearchanges.

It's more to do with getting the plug and wires out of the way , down under the radio , not behind it.

I have one of those, I did write a good review (though it's not on their website for some reason) but I have found one problem with it. I like to listen to either Radio 4 or some nice music, on very quietly when I am in bed, but even at volume setting number 1 it is too loud Also, since I recently fitted a Sony powered sub woofer (which is great ) I have noticed an annoying low pitched pulsing sound when the radio signal is anything less than very strong.

I am looking to replace my BassFace unit now

One thing I do like and will be looking for in a replacement is playing from SD memory cards. I bought a whole load of small memory size ones dead cheap and you can out "compilations" on them like you used to do with cassettes. I have about 10 on my dash tidy, Blues, Reggae, 60's, Mood music, etc (plus I use them with "talking books" on them which is great. Listening to the full (long) version of "King Solomon's Moines" at present
