Eberspacher heater

The Eberspacher on my 1981 Westy only seems to blow out cold air.When I got the van the leisure battery was dead,so I out a new one in which then allowed the heater to work. But like I say it only blows out cold air, and when you turn the thermostat round till it clicks, it just goes off. Are there any Eberspacher specialists in the North West, or is it something simple that I'm missing that stops it working?

When I first fired up my Eberspacher it took a good 5 mins to blow out warm air. On my thermostat I had to flick the switch to the right (left really does just blow cold) and ensure the dial had 'clicked'. Once up to temp it really did start blowing hot air and took a good few mins to shutdown after it turned it off so it could cool.

you can take it to a eberspacher place but it will cost you heavily, is it ticking when you turn it on? if not the pump aint working.

No, I can't hear it ticking. I've also left it ages to see if it came on, but it didn't. There is a wire hanging down underneath the van, with a connector at the end, the sort that looks like a car wiring loom. Its like a male and female bullet connector side by side, but I can't find what it goes to yet, or even if it's from the heater, although it is in the same area. I haven't done a proper investigation yet, but then I don't have a book either, apart from the Westy one, but again, it's all in German. I also believe they have a spark plug, but I really need to get under it this weekend and have a look

that could well be the live to the pump....


There is a wire hanging down underneath the van, with a connector at the end

mmm, those wires ???? yep.


if i didnt know better i would be inclined to think that those wires actually went somewhere once !!!!! you need to have a day under your van me thinks. the pump is about 3" long and is easily visible when your under there.

If i remember the sequence correctly from the commercial webasto's and eber's i used to work on; if the motor runs and you think it's sparking, this proves the control loop (overheat fuses, thermal trips or whatever is in there) so only thing that's missing is the fuel. The wire hanging down does sound like it could be for the fuel pump...

Nice one.I can't see anything that looks like a pump, just the unit itself with all the pipes going in and out of it. The wire itself goes into the unit and it actually has a couple of spade connectors on the end, not bullet connectors like I first though, and it's just been coiled round one of the pipes. Is the fuel pump supposed to take its feed direct from the tank or does it tee off from the engine fuel line? There is some sort of bracket on the chassis cross member near the fuel tank. Is that where the pump goes, on the cross member?

I am presuming it's a d2l/b2l...( big box type under the van)....
d2l diesel/b2l benzine, ie petrol.
Get under the van, as it's on the inner side of the heater....
There you should see a metal pipe protruding from the gasket...
There should be a fuel pipe connected to this which leads to one end of the pump.
Out of the other end of the pump should be another fuel pipe which taps into a fuel line....
I would hazard a guess that the pump is missing....as the connectors sound very much like what should be attached to the pump..
Search ebay.de for a cheap replacement as they are not cheap when new.....

ps, dont buy a new one in case the heater is shagged.
I have a spare dieslel pump you can borrow to tell if the heater is ok, that's if its a diesel one.
I would let you have it, but I have an almost complete heater minus two gaskets which I hope to repair and sell on.
