Help wanted please - no compression.

Hi my husband took out our engine and replaced all the gaskets etc. It was put back in yesterday and now it won't work. The engine is turning over but not firing up. We have checked the timing and we have checked that the fuel is getting through. If anyone has any advice we would really appreciate it. As it is booked for bodywork and respray and we only have a couple of days to fix it.
Bert is a 1985 1.9 w/c

When you say in the title you've got "no compression", what do you mean? No compression on one cylinder? If you're getting fuel through and a spark the engine should run, even with no compression on one cylinder?

Ummm we've been told we've no compression, not 100% sure, the engine is turning but not firing up. Angry and frustrated husband has downed his tools for the day.

We are baffled, we have put petrol in carb and had flames, it is all whirring around but just won't start up. I have read threads and threads but nothing seems to be similar to our problem.

my husband took out our engine and replaced all the gaskets etc.
Why?
What else does the etc. include?
If the engine has been stripped and put back together there could be a lot of things causing no compression. Anything from badly adjusted tappets to pistons being left out of the engine

Hello,
If I were a gambler....
I'd stake all on RED...
And bet you've got the timing 180 degrees out..

To make a remote diagnosis one must have as much information as possible..otherwise all you get will be guesses.
My best guess is the leads are on wrong..

Thank you all, tried talking to him last night but he had too much beer and didn't want to talk about it! Will take some pictures and try and get some sense out of him when we both finish work.
