From memory there should be a spring on the flap linkage .This will keep the flaps open if the thermostat was fitted once the engine warms up the spring effect is overcome and the flaps close..Check to see there is a spring keeping the tension on the linkage.

I could be wrong but I thought the stat held them shut when cold to help get the engine to operating temp sooner and then the spring was allowed to open them as the bellows of the stat expanded.
So you would need flaps SPRUNG open or wedged open Dazz

Yep the spring holds the flaps open it's fitted here and the arm should be vertical when the flaps are open, mines in the closed position.
Worth fitting a thermostat much kinda to the engine.

We all thought it. Just wondered who'd be daft enough to comment.
As an aside, VW designed Aircooled 'shutters' to remain fully open by default so that you can't cook your engine accidentally. That goes back to the Beetle. Likewise if the thermostat fails, 'shutters' won't remain closed.

Hello,
Thermostat 84€,
Tried, and most disappointed..
Remove the flaps and bar...

( you risk being burned at the stake by the 'your engine will heat to 1 million celcius ' brigade)
Block off any air holes in the tinware,..
Like this:
Let the engine warm up gently..
Aircooled bliss
Cordialement,

I havent really used my van much yet, But i have the 2l CU lump with twin solex carbs. Is it worth ripping the flaps out as a matter of course? you seem to be the expert on these A/C beasts. great vids about the carbs BTW just need a rev counter and a snail and im gonna have a go!

No they are there for a reason. Unless you can defy the laws of nature and make airflow turn corners without any deflection.

Hi. So im better off ripping the flaps out!?
As for the bungie. I have no throttle return spring. One arrived yesterday tho. But the carbs need to be balanced and probs need some new springs anyway. Ill look into this as soon as I get a trailing arm to replace my rotten one.
Cheers
