Fuel issue

Hi All

Guess this is the common problem I am guilty of, not starting my bus regularly over the winter.
Tried to get my Air cooled CU engine running, turns over and have a good spark, fuel is the problem.

I have changed the filter by the tank, (is there another anywhere) but not getting fuel into carbs.
Wonder if pump is playing up?
I can get it running briefly by pouring a small amount of fuel down the carbs.

I have put a fresh can of fuel in the tank too.

Whats the procedure I should follow to get her running.

Hello,

Do you have a trusty cranking assistant.. : :) :)

If so , put 5 more litres of fuel in, and then disconnect the HT lead from the coil. :wink:

Undo fuel pipe to carb feed..

Have a little container to catch the petrol..

Spin over for up to 30 seconds,,

If no fuel.. then the pump is suspect..

For some strange reason VW put this pump in a strange place.. :? :?

Best replaced with an electric pump and blanking plate.

I have tried this once I will give it another try soon as I can.
Is it a big job to remove fuel pump? what else do I need to remove?

Hello,

Removing the fuel pump... can be filthy.. but comes off in a few minutes. :)

Easy way in is to jack up and remove the drivers side (uk) rear wheel.. with luck you'll be able to see what you are doing :wink:

Forsee a blanking plate and gasket.. if you are fitting electric pump..

I have a similar problem. Mine is only on the left hand carb and I can see fuel is being pumped to it by taking of the fuel pipe and having someone crank it over.

I suspect I may have a blocked jet or a float problem in the carb which I shall be pulling apart over the next few evenings.

On this one we had to use the old fuel pump for budget reasons.. since the engine was out and in bits, there was not an issue for overhauling the pump...

If you had to do the job on your back.. with crp falling in your eyes... :shock:

I shall be doing a full CU rebuild in May, from the crank up.. and will get it all on video :roll:

vw heritage now sell replacement cu pumps far better than fiddling round with an electric one imho. :ok

Anyone know where I can get a blanking plate? I remember seeing one somewhere but cant find it now!

mines had an electric pumper since i got it last summer (which i had to replace) and i noticed the other week the original is still bolted on with a screw in the outlet tube :?

any idea what the reg should be set to for the fuel pump? looked in the manual but that ranges for 1-4 psi (being mechanical I presume that would just be because of the increase in engine speed!)
