I've got a T25 1983 1.9 Petrol with a flat 4 wassermotor engine (if thats the correct term).

Alls been going great until recent overheating issue caused by a split in the fan cable - which I think has caused the head gasket to blow - (lots of smoke and no water in the header tank initially - now it overheats whenever taking it for a spin and bubbles appear in the header tank when running - though it ticks over fine without overheating - only an issue when putting the engine under load).

I've been trying to track down a head gasket kit for it - but cant seem to find one anywhere and keep reading that the petrol models dont actually have head gaskets... can anyone confirm if this is true and offer any advice to point me in the right direction to buy whatever parts it needs to get it back on the road?

Head gasket is different from many engines in that there is a metal sealing ring on each barrel along with an o-ring top and bottom of each barrel. A large seal/gasket is then fitted between the head than the block ( called water jacket seal) .

The kit above is what you need but it's only for one head, you will need to do both and so a engine gasket set is cheaper and you get extra seals such as crank seals which are worth changing while you are at it.

if you are doing it yourself it is quite involved as barels and pistons need removing from the con rods to change the lower o rings.

There is also the possibility that a head stud can snap while removing the nuts which is another dimension of complexity to fix. Not trying to worry you but it's a realistsic possibility, here's one I broke earlier...

Aluminium engines will deform with exessive heat.
A new seal may not cure your problem
We assume you have had the coolant tested for combustion gas.
That there are no leaks
And you have bled the system correctly
