I'd be looking at all the earth straps from engine to body work and gearbox to body. ( I see you have done one of them)
Look at the earth strap from battery to body.
Clean all connections to battery
(it doesnt take much crap to slow those little electrons down.)
Make sure the connection to the starter from the ignition switch is clean and not corroded (sometimes the spade connector looks sound but falls off given a little pull). Run a test wire from this connector to the battery.

You say it clicks, is it actually engaging and failing to turn over the engine?

Does it spin up when out of the van on jump leads?

Either the field coils are weak (common), the solenoid is duff or as said, the main power and earth connections are not up to it. Abd. sure those mai leads can carry a full current ?

Somedink's wong sumwhere - I know it sounds silly... have you tried a simple substitution?

I may be being daft but have you tried giving the starter/solenoid a sharp tap with a hammer then trying to start it?

Ah! We al thought you were saying there was a starter motor problem... sorry to hear that. Broken crank, hydraulic lock, thrown rod, they can do that.

Presume you have all the plugs out?

It does, a Subaru 2.2 maybe?

Presume you have all the plugs out?

Just checking you've tried to mill it over sans plugs
