Oil light/buzzer

We are off camping on Friday evening so time is at a real premium. Today I started engine which sounded fine on tickover. When revved to around 2500-3000ish rpm the oil light came on and warning buzzer sounded.Oil changed 2000 miles ago and level is ok. I've read lots of posts re: buzzer of doom etc but can anyone suggest what to look for/replace first. Hope it is nothing too serious.

The buzzer is operated by a switch
The switch is a cheap item and should be replaced if suspect lights and buzzers sound

What type and grade oil did you use?

can also be just the wire from the loom to the switch, this happened to me.


The wire runs over the engine so is subject to lots of heat and vibration, change the wire first it's just a female spade at one end and a male spade at the other, you ideally need high temp wire but any wire will do as a temporary fix.

Switch can be seen to the right of the oil filter under the water pump in this pic...

Sorry, forgot to add- I am using multigrade15/40 mineral oil and Mann filter

Check the terminal hasn't come off the oil pressure sensor down near the oil pump or that the connector block hasn't come adrift ... the system itself is working correctly, triggering at 2,200rpm and above.

Thanks for the advice guys. I replaced both pressure switches and remade a few connections and oil light and buzzer now off.

Unfortunately the worse case scenario happened as oil started leaking from around the switch next to the pushrod tubes.I unscrewed the switch only to find the threads in engine casing stripped.

Following a sleepless night I am now off to work and will later start a new post looking for possible solutions

It's not under compression so try PTFE thread tape or Blue Hylomar having wiped the threads/hole clean.

Ian, "not under compression" was music to my ears. I,ve purchased a quality tap and managed to carefully clean/cut threads in the engine casing. I was then able to screw the switch back in using hylomar on the threads. A long reach 24mm socket made the job alot easier.

Incidently I notice there are a few different colour oil pressure switches relating to different pressures; how do you know which one to go for ?

my 88 DG is blue for the oil pressure 0.25 Bar

Thanks for that..the HP switch I removed was grey and the replacement from GSF is white 1.5bar I think. Iwill probably play safe and get a grey one from Brickwerks

yeh I would not risk something so important and cheap from anything other than a good supplier.

Get it sorted and get over to masham this afternoon . I've got the peculiar on order ps perfect BBQ weather as well. We are the oldest and smallest camper on the site, feeling lonley . Daz , Andrea and the beasts.

Been out in van today and oil light and buzzer came on every now and then eg
when doing 25mph in 2nd gear..all ok; put into 3rd..light and buzzer on doing
40mph in 3rd..all ok;put into 4th ..light and buzzer on.

At moment I got white HP oil switch fitted which is 1.8 bar..Do you think fitting the grey switch (0.8 bar) will stop buzzer and light coming on?

Incidently is it possible to temporarily disconnect the buzzer as it is so annoying?

Only by earthing out the wire to the sender near the pump. Fit the correct senders but be warned they may actually be telling you you have low oil pressure .. get it tested properly so you KNOW there's no underlying issue.
