Is it possible to take out a 1.9 watercooled gearbox and swap for a 2.0l Aircooled gearbox? My 1.9 needs replacing and have bought a 2.0 gearbox to replace it (on the advice of the seller). I am now being told by the chap fitting the gearbox that it is not the correct fit. My current set up is 1.9 petrol gearbox with a Golf TDI engine. help please.

can be done but you will need the Aircooled linkage to match the box (that's the back half of the linkage), swap the bellhousing and input shaft from the old set up (I'm assuming it a diesel bellhousing installation - if not swap the adapter plate over) and then you'll probably have to manufacture part of the mount - dk box has a 3 bolt end mount, the old abd has a four bolt but if you have the late diesel engine bars the gearbox mount won't match the chassis - that's what you'll need to fabricate

Thanks Aidan, sounds like quite a bit of work. Think I will sell the 2.0 back on and just fit another 1.9.
