If your pump is leaking it is probably dragging in air and that would cause loss of power and smoke.

white smoke.. timing out (retarded) when was the timing belt last changed? head gasket leaking, if you have a nose like a blood hound the burning coolant will smell sweet or the oil will be milky looking, glow plugs u/s, faulty injectors and finally low compression. one more finally fuel return blocked.

if your getting your pump rebuilt/reconditioned £200 to £300. I just got a new bosch pump for my pug boxer, luckily euro car parts where having 25% off and with the exchange I got it for £300 this was the cheapest I could find, when I needed one.
