Mines got a mind of its own at the moment and ran out of fuel when it was reading quarter full.
any suggestions?

Tank out, fit new sender. Check for rust and cracked breather hoses while you are at it.

OR

Fill up, and keep a check on how many miles you have done.

My guage drops like a stone after 1/2 way.
Someone will say get it converted to LPG (if it isn't an oil burner)
