Radiator Fan

I have a 1986 turbo diesel Caravelle, which since I had to have a new head gasket fitted, has tended to overheat. I checked the fan by shorting between the pins on the lead to the radiator sensor and only the right to middle pins make the fan run and when it does, it sounds as though a blade is hitting either the rad or the cowling. Is there a way to get to the fan without removing the rad? If not how do I go about removing the rad and cowling? Also the wiring diagrams I have show two sensors with a relay and baffle me, is there a better one online?

Up behind it from underneath usually finds the fan and cowling.

Thank you for the link Ian, I tried to use the wiki pages but must have used the wrong search terms.
The entry mentions the Haynes manual, I can't see one listed for the Type 25. I have Bentley Publications, Official Factory Manual and the Pocket Mechanic by Peter Russex, both are a bit light on hands on detail.
