I've had a quick search and I can't find the info that I need. Has anyone ever dismantled or installed a Westfalia skylight? When we bought our van our skylight was leaking and it was absolutely caked in various types of sealant from various attempts at making it water tight. Having a look at Gunzl I bought a replacement seal under the impression that's what I needed. However having spen the morning removing the skylight I notice that mine has 2 seals, one on the 'glass' and one around the hole. The one I bought seems to be a replacement for the one round the hole. Having looked at various sources for skylight spares they all only offer the one replacement seal.

My question is this, how many seals are there meant to be? Did a previous owner add a seal or did it come like that? Also, when I do eventually put all this back should I uses some sort of sealant at all?

Any advice at all would be invaluable, thank you.

Strange mate. My skylight has never had a seal around the plastic (glass) but only around the roof part and has never leaked. The only thing that I can think is that the skylight itself is not fitted how it was from new, so that it doesn't sit right. I think you need to compare with somebody else who doesn't have the problem. Best of luck sorting it out. You do need to put sealant under the bolts that go through the plastic skylight.

Thanks for the reply. I think I may have worked out what's happened. The screws holding the lifters to their plate don't match and indeed one of them is too long and doesn't seem to allow the lifters to lower fully. I imagine that this caused the initial leak and the supplementary seal and gallons of sealant were trying to fix it. I've cleaned everything up and I'll replace the screws and I feel positive that this should cure it. Fingers crossed.

What type of sealant would you recommend?

I took mine out at the back end of last year.

Set in with Dinitrol 501 which is a high modulus bonded windcreen sealant.


So far no leaks even with some heavy rain which is unusual for our part of the world, well pleased with it.

You can see there is only one seal and that was around the top of the upper part that the lid winds down onto, that just needed to be held in place
with a proprietary sealant.
