Aircooled Oil Seal Help Please!

Hello all! I have traced an oil leak to the seal where the oil filler tube joins up with the sump.

My question is, can I replace this with the engine insitu or does it have to come out, as its very close to the engine support brace. I can't make up my mind about it! Anyone else have experience of this job?

It's an Aircooled type four motor.

Thanks in anticipation!

Yes remove the dipstick, undo the bracket from the fan housing you can then pull the dipstick tube out of the block, then you have to angle it to get it through the tinware hole.
You need a 7.3 x 2.4 mm O ring for the seal. Available on ebay if you cant find one thick enough locally.
Your working blind refitting into the hole in the block just a case of fiddling around till you find the hole

This should help you visualise how it goes in.

Thanks for that. However, having just reexamined the area, turns out the oil filler tube has a very small crack in it right where it meets the flange. So thats a nice job.......not!

It's the filler tube seal that I thought was leaking, but it turns out the welded seam on the actual filler tube has a very fine crack in it.
