hi,A friend of mine is having some problems with his 1989 2.1 auto, sometimes its tricky to get it going,he says if you run the gear stick up and down it often cures it.I told him its proberly the inhibitor switch. If you chaps think it is,where will he purchase a new one?Im guessing its located by the gearstick?Or will it just need cleaning? Thanks

yes it is

remove the shroud around the stick, from memory if you take the upper part off you can see the switch.

it may just need a clean and adjust , as you can adjust the position so it will turn over when correctly in N or P , although they do burn out/ get dirty.

many years ago I got one from vw but when I tried a few years ago I was told they were out of stock! try them again , if you remove the old one you can get the part number.

- cant remember if it comes in 2 or 3 parts ,main block , slider plastic and slider terminal.

They are obsolete from VW.

Tolling of a bell
Another part bits the dust.
There might be a good substitute from an auto car

It's just a switch..... It can be bypassed if need be, or another switch used instead .A manual switch could double as a primitive anti theft if suitably camouflaged ?

Other vw autos of same area will have same switch ill bet

Porsche and other VW's use the same parts.https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=31192 ... =firefox-a
http://www.autoatlanta.com/Porsche-Ss-1 ... -srch.html

Part numbers are 171927145A for the actuator and 311927147B for the contact carrier...
