What we have now is in the picture.

What we like about it;

It's well sturdy - it put up with gales and torrential rain on the cliffs in Cornwall last year

Big enough area inside to sit round table and have a few beers with mates if the weather turns crap

It came free with the van

What we don't like;

Really big and heavy when packed - takes up at least half the area behind the back seat and packs into two big bags

Separate groundsheet - the storm in Cornwall left a river of mud flowing under the awning but over the groundsheet and got everything covered

Takes quite a while to erect - only managed to do it without arguments after half a dozen goes

What we would like;

Something with an inner tent preferably in two parts to stow wetsuits, clothes, dog, portaloo. Or to provide somewhere to get changed (daughters getting a bit older and more self conscious) or somewhere for me to kip when I've had a skinful and am snoring like a pig.

Enough room to get mates in even with inner tent up

Any recommendations?

We have an Outwell Country Road awning which might suit you r needs, same as this;

Works perfect with 4 of us, we use one bedroom for storage / getting dressed etc and the other as a loo.

We're thinking of getting a bigger one so we can take our neices camping.

I like the valance to close gap between the ground and van. And the little bags to keep the guys ropes in. Neat.

Makes a big difference when the winds howlin'

The Outwell might not be the easiest to erect (compared to something like a Kyham with quick erect poles) but it's very well made and sturdy when erected. It's also nice and tall so you're not constantly bending..
It's down sides are steel poles and not the quickest to erect but I think it's qualities outweigh these shortcomings.
I'll second that recommendation.

This made me laugh. We have the very same awning, and it is a bugger to put up! I love it though (even though poles are getting knackered etc!). And the design of newer awnings doesn't appeal. Good luck in your search - I'll buy your old one.

I'll have Colg's old one, you can have mine, just need someone to complete the chain with a really big one for Colg!

Ours is called 'traveller annexe'. It's sturdy enough, easy to erect and packs down to a reasonable size

A kyham motordome takes out all of the hassle.

Literally erected single handed in 10 mins....from bag to finished.

Keith; I was looking at Motordome Sleepers, both the drive away and the quick erect varieties. Looks like they're handed the wrong way for a right hand drive van?

How do you mean ...handed.

The main door opens out at the front....the side door would still be on the side....but would be towards the back ? As opoosed to the front of the van....but still fine...i think

Yes, it fits on a standard pitch. We've never had any problems. It's not quite as long as it appears in the picture.
