My problem sounds very similar to yours. I presume you have sorted it by now but the thread stops without any conclusion. Lol. I have changed my glow plugs, cleaned all earths and any electrical connections I could find. Replaced 50a fuse strip near glow plug relay. im getting readings from glow plugs. It still won't start! Undone the pipe which runs from fuel filter to fuel pump, cranked the engine and no fuel coming out. Next filled a can with diesel, disconnected pipe from fuel filter and submersed end of pipe into diesel can. Cranked engine and after a while started up and ran really well. Ok re connected pipe back to filter and engine started straight away ( engine still warm though). That's as far as I got today. I'm gonna replace the fuel filter tomorrow and maybe install a non return valve as advised by someone on here. Any advise welcome. Does any one have link to non return valve ? When running I put meter on battery , reading was 13.5v , don't know if this is relevant to starting issue.

I replied to your pm on most of the points you mention here too - one place you can get non-return valves (other than ebay of course) is here:

they have bulb primers too which are useful when changing filters etc, and have integrated check valves.

When running 13.5V is pretty low if nothing else (lights etc) are on - it may be a bit low after prolonged cranking, so I'd read it again after a longish run. If not you should investigate the health of your alternator - a cheap and easy thing to replace is the brush pack (regulator).

I've a split charge system installed. Would that make the reading lower than the ideal 14 to 14.5v?

it's possible depending on the state of the leisure battery and what it's powering - you could try disconnecting the earth from the leisure battery and taking another reading.

Ok I've got new fuel filter and also bleed valve which clips into top of filter. The bleed valve cost £11.74 + vat. I'm not too sure if I need that part. How do I tell if the old one is ok? They will take it back if its not been fitted. I've also got a non return valve. Where is the best position to fit this. I'm thinking directly after the filter on the way into the injector pump. Hoping to rebuild it after work today.

the "bleed valve" is probably the thermostatic t I mentioned in my message to you - check the rubber seals when you install that - it's quite a common place to get air ingress - I'd probably just change it anyway if you're changing the filter to be sure. I'd put the non-return valve where you say - the filter will stop it getting bunged up, so just between the IP inlet and the filter is good.

I've put it all back together, including new bleed valve, fuel filter, inline non return valve and removed and cleaned k and n air filter. I carefully filled the filter with diesel before assembling. Started first crack of the key. It's running sweetest it's been since I've owned it, a noticeable increase in power too. Many thanks for your words of wisdom Ewan.
