Diesel Conversion Gearbox Type?

Hi,
I picked up my 1984 T25 hightop about a year and a half ago and have been in love ever since. However, he's been off the road since the end of the year due to a gearbox problem. It was originally a 1.9 petrol engine but has had a diesel conversion with a 1988 Passat 16.td engine fitted. It's a 4 speed box.
On tickover there's a "dry bearing" noise from the gearbox which is still present when driving. When i select reverse it will go back a couple of feet then stop abruptly as if i've just hit something. When driving through the gears it actually changes gear fine.
Anyway, the time has come to fix him up for spring. I'm guessing the input or idle shaft bearings are shot? Whatever way I anticipate a replacement or recon gearbox. Any idea what model gearbox is likely to be fitted? Would it be the original 1.9 petrol box or would it have to have had a diesel box for the conversion? How could i tell? Are there codes stamped in, and if so where are they?
Any help will be much appreciated.
Many thanks, Mark
