Hi everyone, I have been reading other people's topics and posts which have helped me work on our van. Thank you for so much help.

We have a 1980 2l Aircooled Devon which we have been restoring over the past 2 years. Perhaps you may be able to help me with a little heating pipes problem. I am working on the heating system as it was pretty bad and not much warm air to the front of the van.

I replaced heat exchangers, risers, control pods and new heat resistant flexi pipes connected to the 'bakelite' ? 'Y' shaped piece which connects to the main trunk going to the front of the van.

The 'Y' piece is in 3 parts rivetted together. When I took ours out it was damaged at the joins and is now in 2 pieces and rivet holes broken away.

I am not sure how to sort this which is a pity as there is plenty of heat from the pods.

just buy a good 2nd hand y piece ,

Or sikaflex it together

Also go over it in aluminium duct tape, to hold it together,

Make sure the foam in the rear to front main tube has not collapsed, blocking the air flow.

Just been ski ing with mine... 1600 CT, toasty toes, and hot( ) windscreen!!

I may have one of these in stock, condition unknown..

Thanks for your advice. The Y piece fixed back together with sikaflex and fitted on the van.

As I mentioned before the old heat exchangers, risers, pods and flexible tubes were replaced. But not the main trunk from Y piece to front of van. We need to replace the fuel tank and pipework shortly and thought it would be easier to replace the large trunking at that time.

We now have everything connected and there is heat up front, but I assume most of the heat is being lost without lagging.

I am posting a new thread inviting help and advice about lagging.

This is subject to confirmation... cos I haven’t done it myself on a T25....

replace tube with 100 mm pvc drain pipe, lag with modern stuff....

Worked great on my splitty....

Oooh I.dunno, the heat my old Aircooled produced would melt that.
It actually cAused cans of pop to explode that were left by the floor outlet. I'd use the original pipe and lag it in something like superquilt or tri ISO if you have any builder mates tap em up!

The large pipe is already lagged just check the inside has not collapsed. But like Jason says a bit more won't do any harm.

mine melted the dashboard vent lat summer without lagging the underneath pipe the heateris so hot i disconnect it in summer

Thank you all for your input. I am getting closer to heating up front now. Ran the van today and checked the dash top lever was set to screen heating. Checked both control pod flaps were fully open.

Still not much heat at screen and airflow not up to much.

I think bigherb is right and the old original large trunk that goes over the petrol tank and connects the plastic Y piece to under the dash is the likely fault.

After running the engine I found the heat exchangers, risers and control pods were very very hot. The new tubes connecting control pods to Y piece and the Y piece itself were hot. The first foot of the large trunk felt quite warm but the rest of it was cold.

I need to replace the petrol tank and pipework and sort out gear linkages and bushes soon after Volks World 2013 so I will replace the large trunk then.

Does anyone know the correct size of the trunking please.

The trunk shouldn't get that hot if it is it is wasting heat warming the underside of the van. Also check you are not leaking hot air into the back of the van through the outlet between the seats. There is a diverter flap above the petrol tank which allows hot air into the rear when selected. the foam seal on the flap disintegrates allowing air into the back even when switched off. You won't get a got impression of the heat until you drive it, give it a run up the A21 and then check the output.
