Just wanted to ask, is it worth taking it apart, cleaning and rebuilding?
Are they even serviceable?
Or just get one off the bay?

I had an intermittent starter motor problem that eventually refused to work. When I took it off, the commutator was burnt in a couple of places , this was probably down to me when in a final attempt to get it to work I "Hotwired it straight to the Battery". Upon inspection I found that a couple of the carbon brushes had totally worn away and the other two were almost gone. So yes it would be worth removing it and having a look under the cap. I followed some instructions for how to strip it from the web.

I ended up buying a new starter motor from my local Auto-electricians because mine failed the day before a two week holiday to Cornwall so I was in a rush to get it fixed. Any auto electricians could either refurbish your starter or swap it for one that they have already done. (my new one cost me £100 but as I said I was severely restricted for time. On the plus side I kept my old starter because they didn't want it as it is not compatible with the new version they sold me.....the new one employs modern bits inside that give the van a car like starter noise instead of the old chug chug noise I used to get before.
