board behind the front grill?

Hi,what purpose do the pieces of board behind the front grill serve.To reduce draughts? Mine keep falling down.How necessary are they?

I took mine off to make access a little easier when I remove the grill, as I use the area behind the grill and on top of spare wheel to store my tools, and other bits and bobs that hopefully are not required on voyage.
In answer to your question, I think they are air baffles.
Someone who may know the correct answer will be along, likeley.

They are air deflectors to channel as much air as possible to go through the radiator. Probably don't make much difference in UK but in warmer climes i reckon they would help keep engine that bit cooler.
There's a big one at bottom of rad screwed to crossmember and one either side of the rad screwed to bodywork behind grille. And to cap it all there's 2 rectangular pieces attached to the rear of the grille. VW don't mess around when it comes to keeping cool.

Just one small thing Brookie, there are cardboard wind deflectors fitted behind the front grille of an air-cooled T25.

Fair point there Bowton Lad, obviously missed the foot-note what original poster was driving! If the grille has not been replaced with one from a water-cooled I can only think it must be a standard fit for both air and water-cooled models. It must be to help get more air into the ram-air duct inlets which are behind the grille. VW don't sell these separately, they come with the grille, but can easily be made out of plastic sheet.

My previous van, a 1980 2.0l a/c had the cardboard panels behind the grille & I think they are a standard fit on all T25s. I always thought they
were there to give a certain amount of protection from the elements without obstructing airflow/cooling.
Of course they could have more than one function.
