My water pump belty is screeching like a good 'un. Have looked at it and its loose.
How the bl***y hell do you tighten it? It looks like the bottom pulley doesnt adjust and neither does the pump? The only thing with any adjustment is the alternator.

The pulley on the crankshaft is simply two plates bolted together to form a pulley. Between the two plates are shims, these more shims move the plates further apart and hence the V belt falls depper in between the plates and hence has a reduced Pitch Circle Diameter (PCD) Remove the shims and the pulley come closer together and the V belt rides up the faces of the plates increasing the PCD. Hence to tighten the belt remove Shims.

Take a look under the drivers seat. There is usually a spare load of shims kept under there for road side repairs.

Just had a better look
The bottom pulley is a double one and appears to be solid, i.e. no shims.
The belt is on the outer pulley.

The engine was fitted new about three years ago. Its got 1.7D on the casing. Does this mean its a different size engine/different pulley?

glenboy, splend had the right idea just wrong pulley!

The shims are fitted on the waterpump pulley, Start of fitting a new belt with the shims you have, tighten a bit at a time so as not to pinch the belt, a socket by hand with no ratchet will get it most way, just keep turning the pulley and nip up keep repeating this,.
If you think it is going to be too tight then you need to add shims.

PCD is to do with the spacing of holes as in a wheel or other such and their relationship with each other. the pitch of your pulley will not alter just its depth/width hence its effect on tightening the belt.
Cheers Mike

Thanks
Much appreciated

Will have another crack at it tomorrow. Just trying to ge it into some sort of order before winter sets in.Saves the griefy phone call from the girlfriend stranded on Bodmin moor!

nearly there, I can see the shims!!

What size is the allen key thing to undo the three bolts on the pump pulley?

I was sure it was the pulley on the end of the crank opps !

I wrote that in a rush sorry. The PCD is to do with the diameter on which a ring of bolts lie. PD (I wrote PCD by mistake) is the Pitch Diameter of a pulley. This is variable on these type of pulleys.

Glad you found the correct pulley anyway Glenn
