hello,

any one got a recommendation for a full stainless exhaust for my 84 westy? (1.9 Injection).

Very happy with the one I got from VWSpeedshop.

I'm in the process of getting a quote from these chaps & they do 0% finance over 6 months (subject to the usual):

Speak of the devil, they called me back today:

£249.00 fitted for the back box
£850.00 fitted for the full system (from the heads backwards)

I was advised that the balance has to be above £300.00 in order for the 0% finance to be taken into account, but gathered from the call that it could be possible for sums under this amount (e.g if i only wanted the back box).

Is yours the later exhaust, with the silencer having just the one flange at the left hand side ? I think, being an 84, it might be the earlier system with the silencer having 2 flanges facing forwards ? The Brickwerks one is an identical copy of the later OE one, just in stainless. Plumbers nightmare they call it

If yours is the early system, that full system from BW will need the extra brackets and silencer mounts etc, adding to the cost. iirc, at the moment he does not do a full system for the earlier (pre 85) vans.

The VW SpeedShop one is very well designed, but a lot simpler. We have one. It is not too loud, but does have more of a throaty grunt to it when accelerating. The standard system is quieter but I am glad I got the VW SpeedShop one, it works well, I think gives improved performance ( a little, but that may just be the throaty noise ) and it is only around £500. It will fit your van.

The next bridge you have to cross is getting the old one off. Three tips = PlusGas (NOT WD40!), lots of heat from a gas cannister blowtorch and patience. Oh and good luck too.

p.s. = Be aware, of some quotes for stainless systems fitted, they cut off the 4 exhaust downpipes, leaving a "stub" and weld their system to the stubs (ie not removing the original flanges onto the heads). I personally don't like the sound of that, but some on here have had it done that way and seem happy for now

At 1984 it's still likely to be the earlier system (but worth checking = easy enough).

Note on the SpeedShop system how they put that loop in the rear pipes to equalise the lengths = good exhaust design practice that is. Plus it comes with a Lambda sensor socket should you want to play with such gadgets

My 84 is also a 1.9 injection, but has a late exhaust system. Also planning on the speed shop setup soon...

pretty certain mine is a late type system but i am sure the early will fit.

The exhaust system ( like the water system ) is interchangeable between early and late, the engines are the same
You can fit late onto a early without changing the water system .
The beauty of the brickwerks one is you can buy it bit by bit as it is fully interchangeable with the mild steel original part for part.....

I have the brickwerks one on my camper and its been no bother, hasn't needed any repairing and is no louder than the original.... It's now done Almost 30k since fitting

The noise of the Speedshop system would be an issue for me....John left early Sunday morning from Shirebrook the other week, he drove up to the gate (some 50/60 yards away) and sat there for a few minutes before leaving....I
remember thinking (we were still in bed) that he was going to get people looking out their windows as it was so loud.

Nice looking system but embarrassingly loud even on tickover...sorry mate, love you lots...

I would HATE a boy racer exhaust, not even on the Scirocco, I honestly think that must have been a case of "it was very quiet at that time of the morning" - "The sound reverberated towards you off the houses" - "You are a very light sleeper" - "You must have had a hang over" - ....

We should do a decibel count at Oswestry - I have an "App" for that (usually used for noisy racing model aeroplanes )

If anyone considering purchasing one, I can rev my van up at the afore mentioned Bustypes do to demo it, pref after midnight and drunk as a skunk (I will turn the genny off to avoid false results )

i don't mind a bit of noise, although... the fuel economy will suffer. Just love hearing a decent exhaust note but that requires sticking your foot down all the time.
