But seriously they are both pop tops. The difference is earlier one with westfalia on the front has a small roof rack on the front and the newer one hasn't.
:ok

Could of been swapped, the later ones have less drag,

or someone could of done a roof transplant to fit the westy roof to a different van?

my g plate 1990 westy has the earlier roof. it's a joker, so is the correct spec, and I have the original sales invoice in Belgium in 1990.

but there was no joker by 1990 - it was Atlantic and California by then. i prefer the earlier roof - i like shoving stuff up there.

Same reg? as Westy's are nearly all imported, the reg given does not necessarily reflect the year of the original registration abroad.
Mines July 89 but was given an F reg when imported...go figure.

Never saw the later version in the States when I lived there - my '88 Vanagon GL Westy had the luggage carrier style.

DVLA policy is to give second hand imports the same or an older plate than the year of registration. The reason given is to stop people pretending that the vehicle is newer than it actually is. I could understand the reasoning if the vehicle was 5 years old or newer, but my van was 22 years old when imported, past any normal vehicle valuation stage. Still isn't it wonderful to know our government looks after our interests so diligently!

I know why they do it...but mine should be a G and they gave it an F reg! I know it doesn't matter really...
As a side note...a very good friend imported his sons several months after mine and was given a reg just 3 numbers different to mine.

Like you say....I could go the personalized route but would still have to adhere to those general rules of age angainst reg.

Got a dumb question to ask... how are the luggage tops mounted? Can you fit one to a Cali like mine?

theyre interchangable,(half the internal sides of the roof and the cab headlining to remove to get at the fwd fixings) i prefer the look of the horseshoe
