stopping rust streaks from sliding door track

Is there any magic trick to stopping rust streaks from under the flap over the sliding door track, i.e. above the rear wing? When I got our van I cleaned them all up, cleaned up around the track with a wire brush and dabbed some primer under there. I think I probably didn't do a thorough enough job, as it is covered in streaks again - does the flap come off (and fit back on) easily?

Yes!
Two phillips/pozidrive screws underneath, lift outwards slightly and push up.

Primer isn't actually any good for covering rusty or bare metal as its porous! Once you have the flap off go at the runner thoroughly with a wire brush, or better a wire wheel on a drill, and then use a rust stopper like Vactan or POR-15, and then paint with auto paint or Rustoleum Clombi-colour before greasing up the runners and putting the flap back. :ok

OK, cheers good tips, I noticed rust is starting to come through the primer in one or two spots I had treated in september (wire brush back to bare metal, kurust then anti-rust primer). I had meant to top-coat it with something, but then winter arrived it just rained every time had a chance to work on it and i've got nowhere to get it undercover. I'll do it all again as soon as I get a chance, and a dry weekend or two - should I avoid kurust as a rust stopper?

Vactan is my favourite and is so so effective. Available on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110979887130; ... 26_rdc%3D1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Everybody has their preferred rust treatment. Some better than others maybe. Chuckle-bus-tom has hit the nail on the head though. Primer is porous. Get a top coat on asap when you've primered.

if you stop the panel from getting wet everytime it rains ie waterproof the sealing trim the rust will take longer to re apear or not at all

Moisture in the air will not be stopped by waterproofing the sealing trim.
