Morning All,

My PS pump packed up and I've sourced and fitted a second hand one although not tested it yet. Both Bentley and Haynes say that you should fit new sealing rings to the banjos (I have saved the old ones). What came off was as follows:

Suction line 18X22X1.5 steel washer with what looks like a rubber or silicone insert on the I.D. Vagcat shows this as part no. N 0138326
Pressure line 16X20X1.5 copper washer (this doesn't look original?). Vagcat part no. N0138444

Both seem undamaged although clearly the copper washer has been compressed. Are they reusable? I spent an hour or so yesterday going round local places and couldn't even find a large enough copper washer. Does anyone know if they are available? Do VW still do them? What have others done when changing their PS pumps?

One final question... does anyone rebuild power steering pumps? It would be good to have an "as new" one fitted as part of the PetenAli policy of being in this Syncro thing for the long term and wanting everything that is replaced to be as new and original as possible.

That's a Dowty Washer (or Dowty Sealing Washer)



Like the copper washers they cost pence and are not supposed to be re-used.

I think I know where I might be able to get them now.

Most proper Motor Factors (i.e. NOT Halfords) or commercial truck components retailers will have assortment boxes of these and copper washers to sell.

I tried two motor factors yesterday - both had packs of multiple sized copper washers but the biggest were too small. Neither had heard of the Dowty seals. Something else I've learnt off here!

I'm pretty sure that I can get them from FWB tomorrow.

Anyone know of anywhere that does refurbs on the power steering pump or should it go on the pile to be weighed in?

Annealed a copper washer for first time last week and it worked ok for me. Not ideal but if its a random size that's hard to obtain it does appear to put life back into them

pete have you a blow torch?
if you have like elvis said you could anneal it, basically heat it up until its cherry red and then drop it in to water, i have done this several times on old british bike head gaskets (there all copper gaskets) and it has worked every time.

Thanks Neil and Elvis. I'll have a go at that even if I can find the right sized copper washers.

Got this sorted now thanks to the advice on here and elsewhere. I couldn't find the right sized copper washers locally (although could get them on the net) and so annealed the old ones which worked well. I could get the Dowty seals locally though (from a hydraulics firm). The difference between old and new seals is clear below so thanks Ian for that advice...



When I first fitted the new pump and started up it made a similar noise to the old one and I thought that I might have a duff replacement. What is was however was the air in the system which took a little bit of bleeding out. The ATF in the reservoir first went very frothy with the air however this quite soon cleared and I was able to start up, turn from lock to lock, top up the reservoir a couple of times and then all was well. Another bit of learning thanks to 80 - 90, Ian, Elvis and Neil - thanks all.
