Having struggled occasionaly to get my 4 speed out of first gear , it now refuses to point blank to come out , whether engine running or not. theres plenty of oil in it and the clutch is good (it doesnt feel like its dragging).Any ideas? . If its terminal am I better off sourcing a used box or have this one reconditioned. Or could it be something a lot less expensive?.

You could try disconnecting the linkage at the gearbox and see if you can get any gears that way, as you could have a problem with the links and this will confirm the prob is G box end.
Oh and not with the engine running!!!

How do you remove the gear linkages if theyre stuck in first and you have the engine running?? The van would be moving in the first place!
  I suppose you could use a car creeper and some ropes to steer!

Im thinking linkages myself to be honest. Was the gear change ever sloppy?

No the gearchange has allways been very positive . In all the replies everybody refers to the gear linkages , ive looked under the van and I can only see one linkage, a single tube , how can that go faulty?

Ok gear linkage!!, as this consists of several parts and links bolted together it is commonly refered to as plural, you want advice or to remain pedantic?

Your linkage can go faulty ibn many ways, unfortunately you dont elaborate on the problem save to say its stuck in gear.

Do we take it the gear lever is solid? and not moving or appearing to move any thing.

They can go wrong which is why I suggest jacking one side up and with the linkage disconnected from the box try locating some gears whilst trying to turn the wheel that is off the ground, Get the haynes to see how to remove it if your not sure.
