hi people!
gearbox is a little noisey, whats best & at what cost?
recently removed ky 1700 d & re fitted 1900 1y, great low mlg runs sweet, but i have noticed a wineing from gearbox
its done 120k and soon as van warmed up its noisey
im considering fitting a 5 speed, althou seen some info on here saying not really worth it??
are parts available to diy recon or am i best to save the pennys and buy exchange recon ?
not forgetting to mention have i caused the wine going 1700/1900d? is the ratios gonna change/affect gearbox
i havent gone mad 55/60 mph, its no ferrari but the wine noise scares me alittle & carnt keep turning the stereo up!
just asking for some advice/ideas, spending alot restoring my first camper & looking forward to getting away this summer but dont wannna end up deaf or towed home?
THANKS, shrekwoody

Gearboxes are expensive. Before you spend money, are you 110% _sure_ it's the gearbox, not a wheel bearing?
Might be worth having a think about and a good describe of the whine - does it do it in any particular gear, is it worse when you're accelerating or decelerating? If you drop it into neutral and cruise, does it still do it? Is it worse or better or the same whilst cornering (left or right)? Any particular speeds?
As far as whether a 5spd is "worth it or not" - consider the overall gearing, not just the number of ratios. If fifth in a 5spd is the same ratio as fourth in your current box, then there's no cruise benefit, merely more in the middle to play with, which might be worthwhile if you spend all your time towing heavy trailers up mountains. Pick a box with a higher top, and you've got lower revs on the motorway. The Wiki's got the various gearbox codes and ratios.

p.s it seems fine at lower speeds
anything above 45 ish it starts & gets worse when accelarating

hi & thanks
full new clutch kit fitted with new bearing whilst doing engine conversion
done 500 mile max
perhaps need to spank the bank and change gearbox
is 125k alot for this type of box?

it's the lack of oil changes that damages these boxes, VW said sealed for life when the vans were new, no oil change only top up if leaking, full VW service history to 100k miles no oil change
what they meant was '100k miles/10 years throw it away and buy a T4'
I've seen boxes with over 350k miles that were fine but had evidently been oil changed regularly
