1Y engine sounds tappy

Hi Guys,
Im on my second 1Y engine in my T25.
Last one the small end bearing let go making a mess of a piston.
This one is great, Its power full and very smooth.
Iv been running with this engine for about three months now and the tone has not changed.
I have recently changed the oil to 10W40 from 15w40 and noticed very little defiance accept it is quieter when warm.
My question is do they all sound like a bag of hammers because the two I have had seam to or am I doing something wrong ??
Any suggestions please.
G

Mine isn't "tappy" - it was from a 1998 Caddy bought blind. I am using 15w/40. How old is the engine?

The 1Y engine is from a 1994 golf and has done 78k.
The pump im using is the original from the engine all I have done is locked it up and changed the cam belt.
It doesn't smoke, powers well and starts instantly. There's no clatter but a ticking noise that you can here above idle revs and most distinctive when driving past a wall or house.
Iv been all around the engine but cant pin point it but it does sound louder underneath at gear box end.
No odious sound when the air box is off ????
I have changed the oil from 15W40 to 10W40 to see if that makes a difference and no such luck I also used a flush to remove any crap from head.
Could it be lifter noise ????
Im going to use a long screw driver to me ear and go all around the engine to see if I can find it.
Any ideas guys

put ya foot on the exhaust downpipe next to where it goes into the silencer and gently push down to see if its coming from there

To clarify, you say the pump is the original from the engine.
Original from the 1Y or JX?

Sorry guys Iv been away for a wile.
So the noise is still there and hasn't changed.
Yes the sump has been changed along with the oil pick up and pump, although the pump is the same.
The fuel pump is the original that came with the 1Y so hasn't been adjusted or tampered with.
The engine otherwise pulls very well, starts on first turn even in the cold and there's no smoke at all.
